UNCP presents Raymond Hagmeier Endowed Scholarship
(this release or story is courtesy of UNC-P sports information office)

Pembroke, NC - The UNCP Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the newest addition to its list of endowed scholarships: The Raymond Hagmeier Endowed Scholarship for Athletic Training. At each of the University's Season Ending athletic banquet, Athletic Training Program Coordinator Jim Wall is proud to present the inaugural award to rising athletes.

In August of 2003, the first annual Raymond Hagmeier Golf Tournament was held at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course near Seattle, Washington. Forty-five golfers participated and began what looks to be a yearly tradition. All of the tournament's proceeds were used to establish the Hagmeier Scholarship, which will be presented annually to a UNCP student-athlete majoring in athletic training.

The endowed scholarships offered by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke are a result of the generosity of alumni, community leaders, and friends of the University. They are a vital key to the success of our athletics program and afford UNCP staff the opportunity to recruit quality students to the Braves program.

Quotes from Scholarship recipients:

"This scholarship has allowed me to stay in school and complete my college studies. I am so thankful for everything you have done for me."

"This scholarship has helped me with my self-confidence. I always thought that I was not good enough to stand out, and be different from everyone else.. and certainly not enough to get a scholarship! I could never explain how truly grateful I am!"

"Being in athletic training requires a lot of time, dedication and hard work. It also makes those who are trying to work to put themselves through school a whole lot harder. WIth the scholarship program that you were generous to start, it takes a lot of stress off me while I work and go to school."

"This scholarship has lightened the burden of paying for collegte, and it has shown me that people really do care for others who are trying their best to be great at something in life. This helps me AND my family since both of my parents just had major surgery! I just can't thank you enough for the support and kindness you have bestowed upon me."

Raymond V. Hagmeier was the loving father of Gayle Francioni, David Glenn, Allan Glenn, and Renee Phillips. After his untimely death in June of 1999, the family of Allan Glenn created a scholarship in Raymond's name at Allan's alma mater, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. This scholarship was designed to assist a student athletic trainer. Raymond umpired baseball at the UNC-P fields (among others) for many years. Allan's college education was made possible through athletic funding and through his work in the UNC-P training room.

It is because of these ties to UNC-P, and a desire to remember Raymond through a tangible manner, that this endowed scholarship came to exist. In order to continue growth of the scholarship, the Annual Raymond's Scholarship Golf Tournament was begun in 2003. In 2005 the scholarship was made renewable for three years with a new recipient being added in 2005 and 2006.
